Five tips for decorating small spaces

When you’re decorating small spaces you don’t have to sacrifice style. Cozy rooms simply require a little more planning to ensure that your home design is making the most of all the available space.

Here are 5 tips for decorating small spaces:

1. Lighting is key

Make the most of any available natural light. If you don’t have any space for floor or table lamps look into wall and ceiling lights. Adding mirrors can also make the most of available light and can give the impression of space where there is none.

2. Buy functional furniture

Consider multi-purpose and folding items that will work harder for you and your space. Think dining furniture that tucks away when not in use and table nests that can be pulled out when needed. Also, don’t assume that you need to ditch all large furniture when decorating a small space. Instead, keep bulkier items such as couches up against the wall instead of in the middle of the room.

3. Be smart with storage

Take advantage of vertical space and use walls for storage. Installing some sturdy shelves will provide a home for books, photos, and any other decoration without losing valuable floor space. You can also look for furniture with built-in storage. Be thoughtful about using every area as efficiently as possible.

4. Go minimalist

When you’re thinking about home design for small spaces, remember that less is more. If a decoration or a piece of furniture won’t serve you, don’t buy it. Clutter can also be a real space stealer, so try not to accumulate too much "stuff." The more clear space you have, the easier it will be to move around without the frustration of tripping over things.

5. Say yes to patterns and color

Perhaps the most surprising tip is to go for bold colors, interesting textures, and eye-catching patterns. It’s not necessary to keep walls, floors, and furniture plain. A bright yellow couch or a huge patterned rug can give life to a cozy space. Just make sure you add in some neutrals to get the balance right.
