REAL ESTATE NEWS Five best wildlife activities in NYC

New York City probably isn’t the place that springs to mind when you’re looking for wildlife, but you might be surprised to learn that the city has much more to offer than squirrels and pigeons.

Here’s where to find the best wildlife activities in NYC.

Birding Bob

Enjoy wildlife without even leaving the city with Birding Bob aka Robert DeCandido Ph.D. Bob’s $10 tours mainly operate in Central Park, where you can learn about the migration patterns of the park’s birds and spot species including the Black-Throated Blue Warbler.

Wolf Conservation Center

Just an hour’s drive from the city, in South Salem, NY, you’ll find the brilliant Wolf Conservation Center. The center has four permanent “ambassador wolves” that you can hang out with.  Their weekly “Wolves of North America” tour is $14 for adults and $11 for children under 12. As well, there are special nighttime programs throughout the year.

New Jersey Nature and Eco Tour

Head to New Jersey to spend a day surrounded by nature at the National Wildlife Refuge. This 47,000-acre area of protected habitat stretches along the coastline. It is a haven of natural beauty.

Tours of the sanctuary cost $47 per person, run from April to September. The tour begins at the New Jersey Korean War Memorial in Atlantic City.

Gotham Whale

Did you know that you can watch whales and dolphins in New York City? The conservation group that organizes the excursions are dedicated to protecting these species and were part of a huge clean-up of the harbor which allowed the whale and dolphin population to thrive.

Cruises depart from Riss Landing in Queens from May to November for $48 per person.

New York City WILD!

Back on dry land, check out Keith Michael’s city nature walks. Keith, an urban naturalist, takes visitors on various fascinating tours of green spaces and historic destinations across the city to discover how much wildlife can actually be found in the NYC “jungle.”

Tours cost $10-$50 and run year-round. Check out Keith’s website for information about his schedule www.keithmichael.com.
