Seven best places to visit in Upstate New York

The moment you leave the hustle and bustle of New York City and head upstate you’re transported into a charming haven of history and nature.

Here are the seven best places to visit in Upstate New York.

1 - Vera’s Market Place
3091 U.S. 9 #102, Cold Spring, NY 10516                                                                              Cold Spring is an ever-popular area for hiking, biking, and kayaking, and Vera’s Market Place is one of the area’s central attractions. Be sure to try their famous cider donuts if you visit.

2 - Socrates Lighthouse
168 Lighthouse Drive, Saugerties, NY 12477
This 1969 landmark is the perfect location for a weekend getaway. Situated on the Hudson River, the lighthouse is now a museum and bed and breakfast.

3 - Peekamoose Blue Hole
Peekamoose Road, Grahamsville, NY 12740                                                                          This crystal clear swimming hole is the perfect place to take a break from the oppressive summertime heat of New York City. In an effort to preserve the area’s natural beauty, visitors must now obtain a free permit on weekends and holidays.

4 - Bear Mountain
Highlands, NY 10911                                                                                                            Bear Mountain rises from the banks of the Hudson River and is one of the best-loved peaks for hiking, biking, and fishing. There’s plenty to do in winter, too. Head there for cross-country skiing, or to enjoy the picturesque outdoor ice-skating rink.

5 - Watkins Glen State Park
1009 N Franklin Street, Watkins Glen, NY 14891
This breathtaking state park is hugely popular, and with good reason: it has 19 waterfalls and spectacular 200-foot cliffs that are a nature lover's dream. Note that some trails close out of season, so check ahead when planning your trip.

6 - Ithaca Falls                                                                                                                   Lake Street, Ithaca, NY 14850                                                                                              This 150-foot waterfall is one of the region’s most powerful.  It’s thrilling to watch it cascade into the lake below.

7 - Storm King Art Center
1 Museum Road, New Windsor, NY 12553
Situated an hour north of NYC in the Hudson River Valley, lies an excellent modern art sculpture park. At any one time, there are around 100 artworks to wander among, and the Storm King Mountain which looms above, is a popular area for hiking.
